What is The Suarez Society web site and how it relates to The Suarez Society?

This web site serves especially registered scholars working in the fields of late medieval, renaissance and early modern philosophy of the schools, thus creating a platform for the exchange of ideas and information concerning research in the area. It is the phase one so-to-speak on the road to establishing more formal scholarly society or association, The Suarez Society, provided there is mutual interest and will on the part of the registered scholars to do so. This would involve drafting a kind of constitution which would delimit e.g. the rules of membership, government, possible institutional affiliations, financial matters (funding and possible membership fees). While the membership in the society would mainly involve registered members at this web site, the registration as such might not entitle automatically for the membership in the society as the constitution might set stricter rules for the membership in the society. Hence the registration at the web site and the membership in the society - if created - would be two different things. Yet if the society is to be established in the foreseeable future this web site would serve as the official platform of the society, so membership in the society would imply registration at the web site.

How is one to register at the Suarez Society web site?

If you have been invited by the editor to join (and not sent your access information at the same time), then simply fill in the registration form and submit. Your registration will be processed asap and you will be sent your access information (username, password) thus confirming your registration.

If you are interested in joining and are an academic or researcher at a recognized institution specializing in the field, then fill in the registration form and submit. Beside this write an e-mail to the editor describing your institutional affiliation and/or providing a link to your personal web site. Once your status is verified by the editor you will be sent your access information (username, password) thus confirming your registration.

If you are interested in joining and are an independent researcher working in the field with no current academic or research institutional affiliation, then fill in the registration form and submit. Beside this write an e-mail to the editor with a short description of your activities in the field and your work (published and unpublished). This is not necessary if someone already registered at the forum sends an e-mail to the editor recommending you.

PhD students are also asked to send (e-mail) a letter of recommendation by someone knowing their academic work (either a registered member or someone with institutional affiliation already in possession of the degree whose affiliation can be easily verified).

What types of information and documents can a registered member post at the web site?

Essentially, a registered member is encouraged to update his profile and use the discussion forum. There is no limitation imposed on this.

A registered member is encouraged to post announcements, new web links, and various texts. Any such posting is not direct but is first approved by the editor, hence it does not appear at the web site immediately after posting but asap.

A registered member is encouraged to post primary and secondary texts thus making them available to others. This is done by sending the respective files to the editor by mail.

What types of documents are available only to the registered members and what is made public to the internet community as a whole?

This can be specified by a registered member at the time of posting by selecting the category from the menu or - in case of files sent to the editor for posting - by specifying the status in the e-mail (i.e. public or for registered members only).

How can I help to make the work with primary texts easier?

While sending primary texts it would be greatly appreciated if one can send also some accompanying notes - e.g. a short annotation or summary of each page of the primary text. This would make subsequent searches by keywords within the web site as well as from outside much easier.
